Team news is in.....no Lineker for Match of the Day

MATCH of the Day host Gary Lineker is facing a one-match absence from the Saturday night BBC show due to illness.

The 60-year-old will swap the Salford studio for the sofa owing to a cold and the former England striker isn’t best pleased at feeling under the weather.

“There’s a cracking Premier League fixture list today so doubly gutted at not being able to do Match of the Day. Had this awful cold for a few days that’s doing the rounds… not Covid thankfully,” he tweeted.

Mark Chapman will take the reins for the show on a day which has already seen Liverpool run riot against Watford and controversy at Carrow Road.

Lineker is rarely absent from the show during the season and even presented in his underwear to mark Leicester City’s extraordinary Premier League title win.

The prolific tweeter was inundated with messages of support from his followers after revealing the news and took to the platform to say thank you.

“Thanks for all the very lovely get well soon messages. Makes you realise that the overwhelming majority of people are kind and considerate. Important not to be mislead into thinking the opposite by the occasional nasty tweet. Cheers all,” he said.

Match of the Day will be on BBC One tonight (Saturday) at 10.30pm
