A CEREMONY has been held for seven trainees who successfully completed the final year of a Worcester heritage programme.

Worcestershire’s Treasures – an innovative Heritage Lottery Fund traineeship scheme – held celebrations on Wednesday (October 21) at the Guildhall, after the trainees completed their third and final year of the programme enabling them to use their new skills in future employment.

With additional support and funding from Worcestershire County Council and the University of Worcester, and managed by Museums Worcestershire, all trainees have completed their traineeships at libraries, archives and museums in and around the city.

Host locations included Worcester Cathedral Library and Archive, the Elgar Birthplace Museum, George Marshall Medical Museum, The Infirmary Museum, University of Worcester Research Collections, Museum of Royal Worcester and Worcester City Art Gallery and Museum.

Alex Kinnersley, project co-ordinator said: “Worcestershire’s Treasures has enabled us to develop key skills within the heritage sector.

“Not only have we trained the next generation of heritage workers, but created valuable partnerships across the sector enabling organisations within Worcestershire to benefit from a range of perspectives and experiences, as well as providing much needed specialist support on the ground.”

Danielle Joyce, trainee at the University of Worcester Research Collections, said: “I knew the traineeship would be perfect for me as I’ve learnt a huge amount about how to manage archives, making me much more employable.

“I’ve been able to take stories from the collections to a wider audience online through blogging, tweeting and collaborating with my fellow trainees.”

Tom Hopkins, trainee at Worcester Cathedral Library and Archive, said: “I’m due to start my new job as a project research assistant at Guildford Museum in early November.

“I’m very excited to be starting my new role and have no doubt my traineeship will have prepared me very well for it.”
