GREEN campaigners continued the calls for more cycle spaces in the city with a festive-themed celebration of the existing sites.
Worcestershire Greenpeace volunteers brought seasonal cheer to the Worcester’s cycling and walking facilities in festive costume to request further improvements.
Social distancing guidelines were adhered to and all volunteers wore masks throughout the activity.
A number of campaigners were involved and one volunteer, who didn’t wish to be named, said: “The cycle racks outside the Slug and Lettuce are well positioned with protection from the rain.
“It would be great if there were similar next to the City Museum and Art Gallery so young families can visit Museum events by bicycle.
“The new Crookbarrow Way bridge is an excellent example of what can be done to help parents with double buggies, mobility scooter users and cyclists cross over the Southern Link Road.”
“I commute regularly by train and use the excellent cycle racks in the arches next to Foregate Station. I am confident about the security here as the station’s staff check them frequently,” she said.
The campaigner also called for more cycle racks to be made available when the station is re-modelled.
In last month’s Spending Review, the UK government maintained its commitment to spending £27billion on new roads, while failing to guarantee any additional money for walking, cycling, or green local public transport.
Greenpeace invited county chiefs Coun Simon Geraghty, Coun Ken Pollock and highways boss Coun Alan Amos to the event to discuss their future plans.
Another campaigner told the Observer: “We received very positive responses from our councillors. They were unable to attend due to prior arrangements but sent us all best wishes.
“Coun Amos told us whilst we had had some robust debate this year, we should be assured the council is fully committed to getting more people using bikes and out of their cars.
“This is in the interests of everybody in the community and they will continue to provide the funding and the will to expand the Active Travel programme.”
