An artistic reflection

A WORCESTER artist has had his work installed in the city’s cathedral as part of a restoration project.

Mark Daffin was commissioned by the cathedral to provide creative banners to mask restoration work being under taken to the east window.

The printmaker was selected as his style and method of work met the requirement for bold, clear images that could be easily viewed and enjoyed by many.

Mr Daffin developed his artistic craft from his creative digital media masters degree at the city’s university – where the final prints for the banners were scanned and digitally processed.

“The distinct identity of the imagery is a result of the linocut relief printing technique and it’s reminiscent of the traditional crafts that created the cathedral,” said Mr Daffin.

“Before designing the images, I spent some time in the cathedral studying the beautiful stained glass windows.

“I was motivated to create prints in my style as it sympathetically worked alongside the windows and fitted in with the stunning architecture of the cathedral,” he added.

The Dean of Worcester Cathedral, The Very Reverend Dr Peter Atkinson, said: “I am delighted by Mark Daffin’s powerful images of the three saints specially celebrated by the cathedral, the Blessed Virgin Mary, St Oswald and St Wulfstan.

“They give a new focal point for prayer and reflection in the east end of the cathedral until the stained glass windows are back in place.”
