Bus services to stay, but on trial

Worcester Editorial 6th Sep, 2018 Updated: 6th Sep, 2018   0

EVENING bus services to Dines Green have been handed a stay of execution by bus chiefs who have once again urged commuters to ‘use them or lose them’.

First Bus bosses have revealed a late evening journey on Friday’s and Saturday’s on the number 30 to Dines Green at 10.45pm and service 35 to Blackpole and Warndon at 11.10pm from the city’s bus station will remain once the new timetable comes into force on September 17.

But passengers have been warned the services remain under trial as bus bosses assess the future of such services.

Sarah East, head of operations at First said: “ We will monitor the journeys over the next couple of months to evaluate how well they are being used and then make a decision as to whether they will remain permanent.

“This will give residents one last opportunity to use the journeys to make them viable or lose them,” she added.

The move comes two weeks after an outspoken St Johns councillor claimed residents in St John’s and Dines Green would be placed on a curfew because of the cuts to services.

Coun Richard Udall said: “This is seriously wrong, evening public transport for vast areas of St John’s has just been abolished.”

“It puts young people, pensioners, health care workers and those employed in the night time economy at serious risk. They have effectively introduced a night time curfew for St John’s and Dines Green residents.

“This is what happens when you cut public transport. All cuts hurt, this will damage the local night time economy and will remove a safe journey home for many people.

“Something is seriously wrong in Worcester when people in most need are being denied public transport,” he added.
