Cash boost of £131,000 to get Worcester gyms in shape

A CASH boost of £131,000 has been provided to ensure two city leisure centres can provide better health and fitness facilities for the community.

The investment from Freedom Leisure will go towards upgrading the leisure facilities at Nunnery Wood Sports Complex and St John’s Sports Centre, which operate on behalf of Worcester City Council.

Both centres will receive brand new fitness equipment, including the latest functional training equipment, strength and cardiovascular machines as well as a new functional training zone with specialised flooring in the fitness suite, allowing people to exercise in an open space away from the machines.

The training zone will also be used to run the brand new 30-minute gym floor Ignite sessions which are designed for small groups of up to 12, giving people interaction and individual guidance from a personal trainer.

Other improvements include the upgrading of the audio and TV systems at both centres and a new stretching mat with two free weights areas at St John’s Sports Centre.

Lee Thomas, Freedom Leisure area manager, said: “We are delighted to be embarking on these improvement works which will greatly enhance the fitness and leisure experience of the local community.

“As a not-for-profit leisure trust we are committed to providing exciting and affordable leisure facilities that will help drive participation and contribute to improving the health and wellbeing across Worcester.”

Coun Jabba Riaz, Worcester City Council’s Cabinet member for Clean, Green and Leisure Services, said: “Worcester has a very strong reputation as a sporting city and I welcome Freedom Leisure’s investment in creating more sport and leisure activities for our residents.”

Work on both centres is due to be completed by Friday, July 1 and members of the community are advised to use the facilities at Perdiswell Sports Centre and Worcester Swimming Pool.
