Cathedral prepares for service in memory of HRH The Duke of Edinburgh

WORCESTER’s historic Cathedral will welcome people from across the county for a service of worship in memory of HRH The Duke of Edinburgh

The service will take place tomorrow (Friday) at 3pm, 24 hours ahead of the funeral of Prince Phillip which will take place at St George’s Chapel in Windsor on Saturday.

Along with prayers for Prince Philip and the Royal Family, the service will include a reading from the Lord-Lieutenant, Patrick Holcroft, and a sermon from the Bishop of Worcester.

The service will be live-streamed on Worcester Cathedral’s Facebook page here and there will be very limited seating available for both civic guests and members of the public.

The Bishop of Worcester, Dr John Inge, said: “The Duke of Edinburgh has been a huge force for good in our society for longer than most of us can remember.

“He had a strong Christian faith and it will be good to commend him to the God in whom he trusted during this service as we give thanks for his life and pray for all those who mourn his passing, especially Her Majesty the Queen.”

Cathedrals across the country will be holding similar services in memory of HRH The Duke of Edinburgh and they will be held in accordance with current government and Church of England guidance for public worship.

Along with readings and prayers, there will also be music from the Cathedral choir.

Around a tenth of the Cathedral’s normal seating capacity will be available for those attending and those members of the public who wish to obtain a ticket should e-mail [email protected].

Tickets will be allocated on a ‘first come, first served’ basis and limited to one per household.

Members of the public who have not been allocated a ticket in this way will not be admitted to the service.

The service has been risk assessed by the cathedral and by Public Health, and covid marshals will attend College Yard to ensure social distancing at all times by those attending.
