Celebrations as Sabrina Bridge reopens

Worcester Editorial 5th Feb, 2021   0

THE REVAMP of Worcester’s Sabrina Bridge continued when the landmark re-opened to pedestrians.

Council chiefs took the wraps off the bridge after the new main span was installed following a major refurbishment.

The bridge was ready to open on January 25 but remained closed due to the local flooding.

The work to improve Sabrina Bridge is an important part of Worcestershire County Council’s programme to improve walking and cycling routes in and around the city of Worcester and beyond.

Coun Alan Amos, Worcestershire County Council’s cabinet member for Highways, said: “This bridge provides an important link between the city centre and business, amenities and university buildings on the west of the river and it’s great that the new and improved bridge is ready to re-open.

“We had hoped to finish the work on the bridge prior to Christmas, but unfortunately we weren’t able to do so, due to the rising river levels at the time. We apologise for any inconvenience caused whilst the bridge has been out of action. We believe that the major improvements will benefit all who use the bridge and will ensure that the bridge has a long future ahead of it.

“The improvements to this bridge are part of our wider plans to enhance walking and cycling routes, not only in Worcester but throughout the county.”

The major refurbishment of the bridge includes the complete replacement of the steel for the bridge span, a brand-new composite deck which will be easier to maintain and have increased longevity, repainted handrails, ramps, stairs and main mast, as well as increased handrail height.

Following the opening of the bridge, some works will continue on Hylton Road to complete the landscaping.

Works will also be needed at a later stage to install the bridge dampers, which will add additional stabilisation to the bridge. The bridge will need to be closed for 2-3 days for their installation.

More information will be available on this closure on the County Council website and social media channels nearer the time.
