Climate campaigners kick off two days of action

Worcester Editorial 25th Sep, 2020   0

CLIMATE change activists have begun two days of action in and around Worcester in a bid to highlight their view county chiefs have failed to act on the climate emergency.

Extinction Rebellion Worcestershire hung banners on bridges around the city, demanding the Worcestershire County Council take immediate measures to address the climate and ecological crisis.

The banners were placed during the morning rush hour and activists will remain with the banners throughout the day to ensure they remain safe and well-secured.

Tomorrow (Saturday), Extinction Rebellion activists will move through the city centre at 11am in socially-distanced groups of six to raise awareness about the extent of the climate emergency.

Some activists will be dressed as bees to highlight the ‘destructive ecological policies’ of the County Council which are leading to rapidly declining species numbers in our area.

“It’s absolutely appalling our elected officials refuse to provide the leadership necessary to address the very real crisis we are facing,” said Andy Lyon, 53, an IT architect from Malvern.

“More than 68 per cent of local councils have declared a climate emergency and many are developing innovative green solutions which improve people’s quality of life whilst drastically reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

“But Worcestershire County Council continue to bury their heads in the sand and ignore the warnings of climate scientists, who are very clearly saying that we need to act now before it’s too late.”

After processing through the streets, activists will gather at midday in Cathedral Plaza and hold a socially-distanced ‘die-in’ with speeches describing the many ways the Worcestershire County Council have failed to take meaningful action on the climate.
