County refugee charity searches for new place to store vital help

A WORCESTERSHIRE charity which supports refugees is on the lookout for a new premises to store and sort donated items.

People In Motion currently has access to a rent-free property near Malvern but this is due to be demolished in the coming months.

With nowhere to take in and sort out donations there will be a direct impact on the lives of asylum seekers of all ages, both in the UK and abroad.

Elaine Lawson, the charity’s co-ordinator and co-funder Kirsty Fraser said: “We are really grateful to everyone who is spreading the word for supporting this vital humanitarian cause.

“Life is particularly tough for refugees at present, and this includes families with babies and young children and unaccompanied minors.

“As a charity, we are committed to making a difference.

“We do this by collecting and donating vital supplies to refugees from war-torn countries.”

Among the items, which are distributed via local groups, are tents, sleeping bags, blankets, clothing and toiletries.

The pair added: “We are well supported by a fantastic group of volunteers and the generosity of local people but without premises, it becomes very difficult for us to take in donations and repurpose them.”

The charity is looking for a large warehouse or unused farm building, such as a barn, or an unused shop premises, within a 10-mile radius of Malvern.

“It needs to be dry because we will be storing clothing and bedding and it should have electricity and parking.

“Ideally it would be rent-free, although the charity would pay for electricity.”

People in Motion was founded in Worcestershire in September 2015 and became a charity in June 2016.

It is well supported by local people who make donations, including knitting blankets – a necessity for refugees.

Anyone with a suitable space should call Elaine on 07598 300689. Visit www.peopleinmotion.org.uk for more on the charity.
