Creative youngsters set the benchmark in CrownGate competition

Worcester Editorial 26th Feb, 2016 Updated: 19th Oct, 2016   0

STUDENT bookworms of Worcester have been invited to take part in a competition to design a bench for CrownGate Shopping Centre.

Launched last year, the BookBench Competition has returned and is inviting all students aged seven and over, who are in full-time education in Worcestershire, to submit design ideas for new book-shaped seating for the shopping centre before Friday, March 25.

A panel of judges will select the winners, who will then have a blank bench sent to their school, college or university for decoration.

The benches will then be returned to CrownGate in time for the start of the BookBench Exhibition, where they will be available for the public to admire and to use.

The exhibition will be open from July 2, for nine weeks, with a host of activities planned for the duration, before moving to The Hive from September 5, for six weeks.

By introducing the competition in the run up to National Book Week in March, it is hoped that the project will complement existing activity across Worcestershire schools, colleges and universities and inspire creativity across the whole community.

Sara Matthews, CrownGate Shopping Centre marketing manager, said: “We launched this competition last year and it was hugely popular.

“We received over 300 entries from 24 schools, colleges and universities last year and we would love to see entries grow even further.

“We had such a fantastic response with so many beautiful designs, that we created a window display of all the entries in Friary Walk, for everyone to enjoy.

“We hope to create this wall of art again this year.

“The competition really captures the imaginations of children and young adults across the county, whilst also providing a practical seating area for shoppers to enjoy”.

Following the BookBench Exhibition, CrownGate will be hosting a public auction of the benches, in aid of Wooden Spoon, the children’s charity of rugby, in November.

Details of the auction will be confirmed at a later date.
