Culture chief makes visit to the hospice

Worcester Editorial 12th Aug, 2018   0

ACORNS Children’s Hospice welcomed new Culture Secretary Jeremy Wright in one of the MP’s first official visits in his new role.

Mr Wright QC, visited Acorns for the Three Counties, based in Worcester to meet staff and volunteers and to have a tour of the specialist offering and extensive gardens by head nurse Gilda Davis and Acorns chief executive, Toby Porter.

Acorns for the Three Counties, based in the Bath Road, opened in 2005 and provides specialist palliative care to life limited and life threatened children and support for their families across the Three Counties and South Warwickshire.

“Acorns makes a huge difference to many lives and it was a pleasure to meet some of those who do so much to achieve that,” Mr Wright said.

“We were honoured to welcome Jeremy to Acorns to see first-hand the work we do,” said Mr Porter.

“We were impressed with the great care Jeremy took to understand, not just the importance of the specialist palliative care we provide to our local communities, but also some of the challenges facing Acorns and other hospices in the region.

“Currently 24 children and their families from Jeremy’s Kenilworth and Southam constituency are accessing Acorns care, so we were particularly pleased to be given the opportunity to share with him the various ways we support and care for those families.”

In the past year Acorns has provided care to more than 870 children and 1,090 families, including those who are bereaved.
