THE FATHER of a Worcester man whose body was found in Diglis Basin said his son would have been “overwhelmed” by the number of people who turned out to celebrate his life.

More than a hundred balloons were released at midday on Saturday (January 10) as Lewis Mullan’s friends and family came together to pay tribute to him.

Almost 200 mourners then packed into Worcester Crematorium on Monday (January 12) for the 23-year-old’s funeral.

His father, Paul, attended the special ceremony at Diglis Fields and he told The Observer the event showed how popular his son was.

“This would have meant a lot to him and he would have been overwhelmed by it,” he said.

“It is very nice that so many people have taken the time and effort to remember him.”

Lewis went missing in the early hours of Christmas day after celebrating his 23rd birthday. His body was found on Saturday, December 27 and Simon Wood, 20, who went to Nunnery Wood High School with Lewis, said he was still struggling to come to terms with his loss.

“I always used to see him in town and now when I walk through town I expect to see him or I’ll be driving down the road and see someone who looks like him. You just hope it’s him, but it’s not,” he said.

“He knew a lot of a people and I think this proves that he was one of the nicest lads in Worcester with the amount of people turning out to pay their respects to him.”

Another long-term friend, Matthew Reynolds, 24, said the balloon release was a great way for people to share their memories of Lewis.

“We went to Cherry Orchard together, but my sister was best friends with him which is how I got to know him,” he said. “He was mad, but you would never fell out with him.

“He just had that cheeky way about it so you could never stay mad at him.”

His death is not being treated as suspicious, but police are still trying to establish Lewis’ last movements.

Anyone who was in the Diglis area about 3am on Christmas day and may have seen him are being urged to call 101, quoting incident number 438S of December 25, 2014.
