A WHITBOURNE man has been banned for driving for 18 months after he drove his car into a neighbour’s gate with nearly twice the legal limit of alcohol in his blood.

Ronald Hunt, of Meadow Green, pleaded guilty at Worcester Magistrates Court on Friday (July 3) to driving with 148 milligrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit is 80 milligrammes in 100 millilitres.

Sarah Belshah, prosecuting, told the court one of the 74-year-old’s neighbours called the police on May 11 and told them the defendant’s vehicle had been in collision with another residents’ gate and believed him to be drunk.

Hunt’s car was parked in the front entrance and when police arrived they saw some recent damage to the near side bumper.

They spoke to the defendant who admitted he had been to the pub and had three brandys and drove back home.

Chair of the bench, Sue Perry, said: “This is a valuable lesson to learn as we have no other choice but to ban you from driving for 18 months and it is a very serious offence to be found driving whilst disqualified.”

Hunt was fined £110 and ordered to pay a £20 victim surcharge, £85 in court costs and a £150 court charge.
