WORCESTER’S 2016 Christmas lights switch-on event has been shortlisted as a finalist in a national competition.

The festive city event has been selected as a top ten finalist in the Revive and Thrive competition, which looks at how towns and cities approach their Christmas illuminations to enhance their communities.

Helen Mole, Worcester City Council’s economic development officer, will travel to Blackpool this Friday to give a presentation to a panel judges in a bid to scoop the award.

Worcester City Council will be vying for the accolade against Christmas lights events in Kidsgrove, Liskeard, Combe, Gravesend, Lancaster, Congleton, Stratford, Rye and Mansfield.

Ms Mole said: “We spend a lot of time and effort trying to make Worcester look and feel festive.

“The city centre Christmas lights play a big role in creating and sustaining that festive appeal, but laying on special events which will entice shoppers in to the city centre is also key.

“By working closely with High Street retailers, many of whom offer special promotions to coincide with the Christmas lights switch-on, we can give a real boost to the local economy.”
