Exhibition helps transport visitors into TV history

AN EXHIBITION showcasing some of TV’s most popular period costumes is currently on display at Worcester Cathedral.

With costumes from such programmes as Poldark, Mr Selfridge and Downton Abbey, the ‘Dressed for Drama’ exhibition in the 12th Century Chapter House gives visitors the chance to get up close to see the designs, embroidery and craftsmanship they have enjoyed on screen.

Running until Monday, August 29, the exhibition will raise funds for the Cathedral, with a number of individuals and companies sponsoring a costume.

Some of the 35 period costumes from London costumiers have never been on public display before and include clothes worn by actors from productions such as the Bafta-winning Wolf Hall and Oscar-nominated The Danish Girl.

Actress Zoe Richards, who played Jenny Dolly in the last series of Mr Selfridge, helped to launch the exhibition.

Cathedral operational manager, Susan MacLeod, said: “We were delighted that Zoe was able to join our celebrations and cut the red ribbon officially opening Dressed for Drama.

“It’s been really special to have had an actor here who actually wore one of the costumes. The Dolly sisters outfits are stunning.”

Peter Atkinson, The Dean of Worcester, said: “Some of the costumes have fascinating connections to the story of the Cathedral. The costumes of Henry VIII reminds us of his elder brother Prince Arthur, who died prematurely in 1502 and whose tomb you can see in the Cathedral.

“The medical costumes of a First World War soldier and nurse remind us of the many First World War names commemorated in the Cloister windows just outside the Chapter House.”

Tickets are £6.50 for adults, £4.50 for children, £15 for a family and under fives are free. Tickets are on sale at the Cathedral’s Chapter House entrance.
