Festival a step closer thanks to Lottery cash

Worcester Editorial 24th Jan, 2017   0

A CELEBRATION of food, music and dance from around the world is a step closer after a city group scooped £8,000 from the Big Lottery Fund.

The Friends of Fort Royal Park and Commandery Gardens have celebrated their own lottery win after being awarded the grant from the new Celebrate! fund.

Celebrate! was set up to support projects which will bring communities together to celebrate and share their diverse cultures.

The cash injection will enable the group to realise their vision of holding the ‘One World in Our Park’ festival in Fort Royal Park towards the end of August during the Worcester Festival.

Leading up to the festival, the Friends are planning a number of workshops for children and young people to cook with chefs from diverse culinary backgrounds and develop music and dance performances to share on the day.

There will be other opportunities for local people to get involved by sharing their stories and photos of Fort Royal Park which will be woven together to create a social history of the park.

Chair of the Friends’ group, Lynn Denham said: “This will enable us to put on a bigger family event than ever.

“We are looking forward to a wonderful celebration, sharing different foods, music and dancing and sharing memories of the park,” she added.

The Friends of Fort Royal Park and Commandery Gardens were supported in their bid by C&T, a small creative group, based at the University of Worcester who specialise in community digital technology.

Max Allsup, assistant director at C&T said: “Fort Royal Park is one of the most beautiful and historically significant locations in our great city.

“We think a unique mesh of community activities, state of the art digital technology and cultural celebration will make for a highlight of the year,” he added

Any community groups who are interested in getting involved in the One World in Our Park Festival should contact Friends of Fort Royal Park and Commandery Gardens.
