Former pupils join in centenary year

PAST pupils of a city primary school are being urged to return to the classroom as it prepares to mark its centenary year with a series of exciting events.

Staff at Stanley Road Primary School are hoping to make 2015 a year to remember as they look to celebrate their 100th anniversary in style.

The school will kick off the year with dance events on Friday, February 13 and Friday, March 27, while pupils will also be creating a centenary themed garden for the Malvern Spring Festival in May.

The celebrations will then be completed on Friday, June 26 with its annual StarFest and deputy head teacher Stephen Murphy said he hoped former pupils would turn out to see the show.

“We really hope that people will come forward and help us to celebrate the centenary,” he said. “We want people to bring us their memories and their views of their days at the school, so it can be a really rich learning experience for pupils.

“We would not only like to celebrate with those at Stanley Road now but also with the entire community and people who have been part of the school’s history.

Pupils and staff have already been delving into the archives where they have come across old photographers and artefacts including an Edwardian school desk, an ink well and a gramophone.

The anniversary has also been incorporated in the school’s curriculum which Mr Murphy said has gone down well with pupils.

“We have always been a school which explores the arts very well like dance and music,” he said. “But now we have got this historical context children will be devising choreography about 1920s Charleston and 1950s Rock and Roll.

“I have also really enjoyed this as it has been absolutely fascinating to see photographs of old school football teams where all the boys are wearing flat caps.

“We have also got amazing archives of old teachers’ notebook, so it has read about the things that preoccupied them then still do now, like children’s behaviours and staying on top of your marking.

“But others have completely changed like collecting milk money and some of the ways they treat behaviour have completely changed.”

Past pupils and staff interested in taking part in the celebrations should contact Stanley Road on 01905 355043
