Four new cameras to tackle speeding drivers on busy Bedwardine roads

Worcester Editorial 16th Mar, 2022   0

A FURTHER crackdown on speeding drivers on three busy Bedwardine roads will see the introduction of four more speed cameras to improve pedestrian safety.

Highways chiefs have also been instructed to examine the possibility of a new pedestrian crossing in one of two Worcester traffic blackspots to further protect pedestrians from harm.

The new additions are the brainchild of Bedwardine city and county counclllor Alan Amos, who is also the cabinet member responsible for Highways at County Hall.

It comes just over a year ‘speeding and selfish and dangerous parking’ around Pitmaston Primary School was tackled with the introduction of five new VAS signs.

Signs were put up on Malvern Road, Swinton Lane, Hanbury Park Road and Bransford Road in February last year.

And speaking to the Observer, Coun Amos said the focus of the proposed new speed cameras would be on the traffic on Malvern Road, Bromwich Road and Bransford Road – areas which he says attract ‘a fair amount of traffic going too fast’.

“In recent years, I have installed ten speed cameras or vehicle activated signs (VAS) – more than any other area in the county – two on each of those three main roads, and others on side roads which also suffer such as Hanbury Park Road, Swinton Lane, and two in Canada Way,” he said.

“However, with the inevitable increase in traffic volumes and large vehicles using some of the side roads, I have ordered four more cameras which will be installed in strategic locations bringing the total number up to a record 14.

“I invite residents to contact me if they would like one in their own area.” Coun Amos added.

The Highways boss said the proposed new crossing would be in one of two locations – one near the Lower Wick roundabout and petrol station on Malvern Road or on the Bromwich Road near the junction with Cormorant Rise. Both locations experience high volumes of traffic.

“Whilst we have some of the safest roads in the county, I keep the situation under constant review by collecting speed data and listening to and acting on residents’ concerns,” Coun Amos said.

“We need to remain vigilant and have a flexible approach to deal with new and on-going issues.”
