Fun week has a serious message

Worcester Editorial 19th Feb, 2015 Updated: 19th Oct, 2016   0

UNIVERSITY students have carried out a week of fun-filled events to raise awareness of climate change.

The University of Worcester marked the People and Planets Go Green week with five activities highlighting aspects of sustainable living.

Litter picks and a guided bird tour were used to focus on nature and biodiversity on Monday (February 9) while a food fair and cooking demonstrations highlighted health issues on Tuesday (February 10).

The rest of the week saw drama students performing ‘skits’ on Worcester public transport to raise awareness of sustainability and other students were given advice on saving energy and managing their utility bills.

The week ended with an Igloo build designed as a play area from the university’s nursery using 450 recycled milk bottles. The students collected bottles themselves and cleaned them.

Katy Boom, the university’s director of environmental sustainability, said the week had created valuable opportunities to increase people’s knowledge on the subject.

“We were recently named as the second greenest university in Britain, and we are delighted that our students are so committed to the University’s green ethos and organised plenty of interesting, fun and valuable activities for this year’s Go Green Week,” she said.

“One of the aims behind the project is to inspire students to change their habits and live more sustainably. We have a student population of around 10,000 at Worcester, so it is vital that we show them how small changes can make a big difference, and teach them things that will help them both now and in the future.”

Christopher Lopez was one of the students involved in the igloo build and is part of  SUSTHINGSOUT a group which commits to helping people save energy.

He said: “It is important to show people how to reduce energy levels and inform them on sustainable energy.” Mr Lopez also writes a blog on the subject.
