Funding drive to help raise £25k

A MAJOR bid to raise £25,000 for a new minibus for New College Worcester has been launched to keep the vital lifeline for students on the road.

College chiefs have taken the wraps off a bid to replace the current minibus which is very old and desperately needs replacing.

The minibus at the college is used on a daily basis, during the school day, in the evening and at weekends. It’s an essential part of students’ lives, whether it is for educational opportunities, social activities or sport and physical recreation at the college.

All the students at New College Worcester (NCW) are blind or visually impaired and the staff strive to ensure they are not isolated and they are part of the community and having transport is a really big part of the effort.

Principal Nic Ross said: “NCW is determined to enhance every element of a young person’s time with us. In order to achieve, this, we need to be able to take our students away from college to participate in trips and activities, all designed to promote independence, confidence and self-advocacy.

“Our young people have often been told ‘you can’t.’ Residential camps, activities, visits and totally new experiences show them ‘you can’, she said.

After setting up a crowdfunding page, the school has been overwhelmed with the generosity shown and more than £7,000 has already been raised towards the £25k target.

One of the messages left on the page read: “Amazing place with amazing staff and children. This school challenges and changes the children’s lives. Encouraging independence and preparing them for their future ahead. Well done the NCW team.”
