A CARING woman is going the extra mile in aid of a Worcester charity and in memory of her friend’s daughter.

Dominique Edwards, will be running the London Marathon this Sunday (April 26) in memory of her best friend Ali Pitt-Hughes’, daughter, Effie, who was cared for by Acorns Children’s Hospice, on Bath Road.

The charity was on hand to provide specialist care for the baby and support her family when she was diagnosed with Edward’s Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder, and died at just four-months-old.

The 32-year-old is now a teacher at Pershore High School after studying her A-levels at Worcester College of Technology, where she met Ms Pitt-Hughes 14 years ago.

Mrs Edwards said: “This is a charity close to my heart. Ali lost her beautiful daughter Effie and I will be running the London Marathon in her memory, just a week after what would have been her 5th birthday.

“I’ve done various runs before, but doing the London Marathon has always been on my list. It’ll be a tough race, but the fact I’m doing it for such a good cause will spur me on.”

Ms Pitt-Hughes said: “I don’t know how I would have got through my situation without the care and support of Acorns. They were a lifeline when we needed them most, providing everything we needed to cope, from emotional support, to every-day practical advice.

“It was such a difficult time but Acorns community worker Jan helped me to accept my feelings and know that it was ok to feel the way I did. She provided a non-judgemental, sympathetic ear. I knew I could speak my mind and admit my inner-most emotions and feel safe doing so.

“Acorns are a miraculous organisation that really made me feel part of their family. Without my mum, Acorns and Dominique, I don’t know where I’d be.

“She is so altruistic and selfless and puts everyone else before herself. It’s this dedication and determination that I really admire that about her. She’ll be putting herself through a lot running the marathon and I’ll be there cheering her on and giving some moral support.”

Acorns has been caring and supporting children with life-threatening and life-limiting illnesses for ten years and has helped 465 families across the three counties.
