Historic Guildhall scoops prestigious award

Worcester Editorial 4th Jul, 2017   0

WORCESTER’S historic Guildhall has received a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence while the city’s popular Gheluvelt Park has also been awarded the accolade for a second year running.

The Certificate of Excellence accounts for the quality and quantity of reviews submitted by travellers on TripAdvisor over a 12-month period.

To qualify, a venue must maintain an overall TripAdvisor rating of at least four out of five, have a minimum number of reviews and must have been listed on TripAdvisor for at least 12 months.

Worcester’s Guildhall is currently ranked at number seven out of the 49 most popular ‘things to do’ in Worcester on TripAdvisor’s website, with Gheluvelt Park at number three.

Dating back to 1721, Worcester’s Guildhall has a fascinating history – it was once the seat of justice for the city and even housed a prison.

For many years, the Court Room witnessed scenes of high drama. Prisoners, many of whom were sentenced to death, were led up to it through a trap door in the middle of the floor, and once sentenced, were taken down again to await their fate.

Over the years, the building has received its fair share of Royal patronage. Queen Elizabeth II visited in 2001 and 2012, and King George III and Queen Charlotte visited in August 1788, with three of the princesses.

A portrait of the King still hangs in the Assembly Room to mark the occasion.

“The Guildhall is not only one of Worcester’s most beautiful buildings, but also offers visitors an insight into Worcester’s rich and varied history,” said Coun Lucy Hodgson, chair of the Place and Economic Development Sub-Committee at Worcester City Council.

“Our historic Guildhall belongs to the people of Worcester. It’s well worth a visit, particularly as it’s completely free to look around,” said vice-chair Coun Geoff Williams.

“With its impressive historical décor, the Guildhall is also the perfect venue for weddings and other celebrations.”

Six rooms in The Guildhall are available for hire and the venue can accommodate events ranging from meetings for 12 people to private catered functions, including weddings, for up to 200 guests.
