Honouring heroes of the regiments

Worcester Editorial 3rd Sep, 2021   0

THE BRAVE sacrifices made by the Worcestershire Regiment and the Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment (WFR) were commemorated at an event in Gheluvelt Park.

Last Thursday’s (August 26) parade remembered the service to this country of both regiments and 20 Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment Association members were in attendance along with their families.

Citations of the 1st Battalion Worcestershire Regiment at Vernon, France in the spearhead of the Allies push to cross the River Seine in 1944 were among the first to be read.

The 2nd and 7th battalions of the Worcestershire Regiment in Burma 1944 were remembered following the VJ Day commemorations earlier this month which saw members on parade in Evesham at the Burma Star memorial near the Almonry.

Part of the citation to remember the 1st battalion in Malaya which served from 1950 to 1953 included details of an Iban tracker who won the George Cross medal, the first to do so by protecting a Worcester soldier who was wounded.

The service of WFR, the Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters ‘Woofers’ in Northern Ireland, B.A.O.R, Belize, Cyprus, Falkland Isles, Bosnia and Afghanistan plus numerous other postings were all remembered during the ceremony.

Dudley branch chairman Brian Lee laid the wreath at the Worcestershire Regimental Stones while Worcester branch member Rob Atkinson was given the honour at the WFR memorial bench.

Owing to the pandemic, no meetings of the association have taken place since February 28 when the 50th Anniversary of WFR was commemorated with a reunion.

Local association members have confirmed meetings will resume on September 28 from 8pm at the Barbourne Ex Services Club on the Moors.

Ex-members of the Regiments are welcome to attend.
