How a Worcester park is serving up free tennis sessions in countdown to Wimbledon

Rob George 18th Jun, 2022

FREE tennis in the run-up to Wimbledon will be on offer as Freedom Leisure chiefs together with Worcester City Council serve up a treat for city residents.

Freedom Leisure, a not-for-profit trust which manages three leisure centres on behalf of Worcester City Council, took over management of the council-owned tennis courts in the city in September 2020 and currently offers 15 hours of free tennis per week.

However, until June 26, the courts will be available for free between 3pm and 9pm weekdays and from noon to 8pm at the weekend. Cripplegate Park has five tennis courts, including mini tennis nets on court five, which is perfect for families to enjoy tennis together.

Rob Tyler, Freedom Leisure area manager, said: “We are thrilled to be working with Worcester City Council on this project to offer free tennis to Worcester residents in the run-up to the Wimbledon tournament with rackets and balls available on request too.

“We urge everyone to pick up a racket and have a game during this two week period.

Whether you are an experienced player or complete beginner, this is your chance to enjoy the Cripplegate Park tennis courts.”

Coun Jabbar Riaz, chair of Worcester City Council’s Communities Committee, said: “With Wimbledon just round the corner, this is a great chance for Worcester’s young answers to Emma Raducanu and Andy Murray to try out their volleys entirely free of charge.”
