Hylton Road to close as Severn threatens to break record high

Worcester Editorial 21st Feb, 2022   0

ADDITIONAL pumps for Hylton Road and the possibility of the reintroduction of the New Road contraflow are looming as Worcester’s River Severn threatens to set a new record high.

The impact of Friday’s (February 18) Storm Eunice and torrential downpours over the weekend have seen the river rise dramatically in the past 48 hours with the Severn now at 5.16metres at Barbourne.

It’s the second highest level on record and just 0.63metres below the record for the Severn at that location during the floods of February 2020.

With forecasters predicting the Severn is unlikely to peak until at least Wednesday (February 23), it’s expected the floods will have an even greater impact in the next 48 hours.

Council chiefs will close Hylton Road at 7pm tonight (Monday) until 10pm for the installation of more flood pumps to protect businesses.

Discussions are also being held over the prospect of the New Road contraflow – a shuttle bus linking the west of Worcester to the city centre – being introduced overnight on Tuesday night.

County council highways bosses are expected to make a decision after updated information from the Environment Agency.

Pedestrians are being told not to use the riverside footpath at the bottom of Hylton Road which is closed due to flooding. The pedestrian crossings by McDonalds and Worcester Bridge remain open.

Diglis footbridge is also closed as a result of flooding.
