LISTEN: ‘Wish You Remembered’ by Pauline and Paul Heywood
CARING Worcester songwriters have released a charity single in memory of loved ones who have lost their fight against dementia in a bid to raise vital funds for charity.
Pauline and Paul Heywood have written and recorded ‘Wish You Remembered’ in memory of Pauline’s sister and their sister-in-law to raise money for Alzheimer’s Research UK
The retired couple, from Worcester, have been songwriters for some time but Pauline was so moved at the loss of sister Freda Burke and sister-in-law Mary Burke who both lived with dementia, it inspired her to write this song.
Paul collaborated with two special lines of lyrics, plus technical assistance to Pauline.
In early stages of Alzheimer’s, Freda told Paul: “I know I am not well, but I still love you all.” There was an affinity between them, and Paul’s vocal version expresses this – Freda loved him to sing to her. Pauline’s vocal version will be available shortly.
Pauline and Paul aim to raise £1,000 for Alzheimer’s Research UK, which powers world-class studies focusing on prevention, diagnosis and treatments for dementia.
Pauline said her sister Freda was a very sociable lady, who enjoyed outings, entertainment, tea dances etc. But, as she lived alone, Alzheimer’s robbed her of her independence. She spent three years in residential care before her daughter, Eileen, left her job to care for her mum, assisted by her husband John, in their home.
Pauline and Paul’s sister-in-law Mary was a respected matron and described as a charming, intelligent and caring lady.
Both Freda and Mary died in April 2020 and due to Covid-19 restrictions neither had the send-off they deserved. Tragically Pauline’s eldest sister Vera is now living with Alzheimer’s,
“A musical dedication seemed particularly appropriate. Freda never forgot her favourite songs and would try to sing along or make ‘arm actions’ to the beat, especially when she heard her favourite Tom Jones,” Pauline said.
“Mary also enjoyed musical gatherings. Singing and dancing seems to bring a glimmer of enjoyment into the lives of those living with Alzheimer’s.”
The single was released on Friday (May 21) and 100 per cent of the proceeds will be donated to Alzheimer’s Research UK.
