WORCESTER’S Labour group has revealed a new look shadow Cabinet to hold the ruling Conservative leadership to account.

Coun Richard Boorn, Dr Matt Lamb and Geoff Williams will be responsible for Finance and Resources, Clean and Green Services and Economic Prosperity, respectively.

As Group Leader, Coun Adrian Gregson has an overall strategic role but is also responsible for heading up Tourism issues for the opposition.

Coun Lynn Denham has been handed the role of watching over the Conservative’s policy to outsource council services.

“Outsourcing of council services is the cornerstone of the Tory administration’s plans,” said Coun Gregson.

“Labour intends to make sure that all outsourcing plans are properly monitored, scrutinised and challenged, and where possible alternatives are put forward.

“I think it is vital that one person is available to concentrate on this area of policy,” he added.

Coun Simon Cronin has been given the job of monitoring the progress of the Task and Finish Report on the City Centre.

He will check progress against the report’s recommendations and challenge inconsistencies, as well as promoting any new ideas from the Labour Group.

Coun Roger Berry will continue to shadow the work of housing, the community and voluntary sector, and museums while Coun Paul Denham will work on community safety, CCTV, Regulatory Services, health and well being and environmental issues.

Former Labour parliamentary candidate Coun Joy Squires has been named Deputy Leader of the party and Coun Gregson hailed ‘a great team’ to hold the Conservative administration to account.

“We will use every opportunity to put forward our vision and policies and demonstrate that the delivery of services to the public by local public service is the most effective, efficient and accountable way of delivering good local government in the city,” he said.

“Not, as the Tories seem to want, the end of Worcester as we know it.”
