Labour's Barry Gardiner set to speak at 'fire and rehire' meeting in Worcester

Worcester Editorial 29th Jun, 2022   0

A BID to crackdown on the controversial practice of ‘fire and rehire’ will be at the heart of an evening with Labour MP Barry Gardiner.

The Brent North MP and former Shadow Secretary of State for International Trade will be at Worcester’s Whitehouse Hotel tomorrow (Thursday) from 7pm.

‘Fire and rehire’ is a practice where employers dismiss workers and subsequently re-engage them to do the same job on inferior terms and conditions.

Workers face large pay cuts, changes to working hours and more – or the sack.

The most high profile case of the practice being used was the row involving British Gas employees, many of whom refused to sign new contracts and lost their jobs as a result.

Thursday’s meeting has been organised by Worcester Trades Union Council and will involve a short documentary film on the campaign against fire and rehire, followed by a question and answer session with Mr Gardiner.

Doors open at 6.45pm and members of the public are welcome.
