Leisure centre launches new triathlon sessions

A WORCESTER leisure centre has launched a series of triathlon sessions for women and residents over 50 as part of a new healthy lifestyle programme.

Freedom Leisure, which operates Perdiswell Leisure Centre on behalf of Worcester City Council, has teamed up with British Triathlon to host the sessions every Tuesday between 7pm to 9pm, to help beginners take their first steps into triathlon.

The Bilford Road centre will also host a mini beginner ‘GO TRI’ triathlon on Saturday, June 10, for those who want to put their new found skills to the test in an eight length swim, a cycle on the spin bikes and a 2.5km run.

Vanessa Bale, Freedom Leisure aquatics development officer, said: “Triathlon is one of the fastest growing sports in the country and we’re delighted to be able to help British Triathlon show people just how accessible it can be, even for a total beginner.

“Our sessions will introduce people to each of the sports, whatever their ability, in a friendly, fun and safe environment.”

Helen Barklam, from British Triathlon, said: “These sessions are designed for those who have always fancied having a go at triathlon, but never taken the plunge.

“Mixing different activities like swimming, running and cycling is a great way to get in shape, as the different sports challenge different parts of the body. This is a wonderful opportunity and you will be trained by our qualified and experienced coaches and instructors.”

The over 50s sessions will run from 7pm to 8pm and the women’s only training will run from 8pm to 9pm.

The courses will run until Tuesday, June 6 and cost £20.
