Light up the city to join first-ever lantern walk

A CHILDREN’S hospice is asking residents to light up the city with their fundraising event.

Acorns Children’s Hospice is bringing their Lantern Walk to Worcester for the first time on Saturday, November 14, to raise money to go towards the care and support they provide.

Hundreds of sponsored walkers are expected to be at Worcester Racecourse with their glowing lamps completing either the 5km or the 12km stroll. The event is sponsored by recruitment company First Personnel so all the cash collected will go towards the specialist palliative care Acorns provides to children with life-limiting and life-threatening illnesses and their families.

Clare Burden, a specialist children’s nurse at Acorns for the Three Counties, said: “The majority of our work is funded by the generous support of fundraisers at events like the Lantern Walk. Money raised through sponsorship from this event means that nurses like me can provide the specialist one-to-one care for life-limited and life-threatened children and support for their families which is so vital.”

“It costs Acorns nearly £9million per year to provide the care we do, and we rely on the public for the bulk of this amount, so I’m hoping lots of people shine with us and help make this year’s Lantern Walk the biggest and brightest yet.”

In the last year, the hospice has helped 760 children and 980 families, including those who have been bereaved.

It costs £10 to enter for individuals, £30 for a family of four and £40 for five people. All participants will receive a Lantern Walk T-shirt, a battery-operated lantern and a medal as part of the registration fee.
