M5 now closed at junction nine northbound after two serious crashes and substantial diesel spill

HIGHWAYS chiefs have now extended a diversion following crashes on the M5 which has left four lanes of the motorway closed.

Motorists will now be taken off the M5 northbound at junction nine for Tewkesbury after delays of up to 40 minutes built up to the site of the original closure from junction eight (M50) to junction seven (Worcester).

In addition to all three lanes being closed northbound, the outside lane southbound between seven and eight is closed as emergency services deal with the incidents which took place earlier this morning (Wednesday).

Six people were injured when an HGV crashed with a people carrier at about 3am between junctions 8 and 7, said Hereford and Worcester Fire Service

Four lorries then crashed at the same site at about 4:30am, closing the northbound carriageway.

National Highways have confirmed there has been a ‘substantial’ diesel spillage across three lanes of the motorway.

The closures are expected to be in place for some time and people are being advised to seek alternative routes whilst emergency services deal with the incident.
