National awards for stage group

ONE OF the city’s drama societies has won two national awards for their productions.

Worcester Operatic and Dramatic Society’s (WODS) performance of mack and Mabel won the 2014 Best Musical Award in the National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA) awards while their youth section’s (WODYS) rendition of Footloose also picked up the 2014 Best Youth Award. Both shows competed against the rest of the region and appeared at the Swan Theatre.

Mack and Mabel tells 20 years in the life of silent movie actor and director Mack Sennett and one of his stars, Mabel Normand.

The WODYS’ adaptation of the popular 80’s movie Footloose was a sell-out and features some of the classic theme songs including Holding Out For a Hero and the film’s title soundtrack.

Peter Brown, WODS president, said: “I am so proud to be president – two years and four NODA Awards. Well done to everyone who works so hard on all our productions”.

David Humphries, WODYS chairman and show producer, said: “We are all very thrilled at receiving these two awards from NODA. Footloose, which played to capacity audiences, was an exceptionally happy show for everyone involved. Having these awards is an added bonus and my thanks go to the youngsters and all the adult volunteers in making the show such a great success.”

WODS latest production of West Side Story hit the stage last Tuesday (April 21) and the youngsters interpretation of Annie will be shown at the Swan Theatre from Tuesday (August 4) until Saturday (August 8).

Ticket can be bought from Huntingdon Hall box office or by calling 01905 611427.
