Next phase of improvement works in Worcester set to start soon

Worcester Editorial 17th Mar, 2022   0

THE NEXT phase of improvement works in the northern end of Worcester’s city centre is set to begin in April.

The second phase of work includes plans to upgrade public areas in Trinity Street, St Swithin’s Street and Trinity Passage, with improvements including new surfacing, street lights and street furniture.

The programme of works, which started earlier this year in Angel Row and Angel Place, is part of the investment of £17.9million from the national Future High Streets Fund to improve this part of the City Centre.

Worcestershire County Council and Worcester City Council are working in partnership on the improvements which are being delivered by Worcestershire County Council.

Coun Alan Amos, Worcestershire County Council’s cabinet member for Highways and Transport said: “The Future High Streets Fund will enable us to make some significant improvements to the city centre and it’s brilliant that Trinity Street and St Swithin’s Street are next in line for some work.

“The works will be undertaken link in with our commitment to improve the environment in the centre of Worcester, aiming to make the area more attractive for businesses, residents and visitors.”

Coun Marc Bayliss, leader of Worcester City Council, said: “The City Council has secured nearly £18million from the Government’s Future High Street Fund to revamp the northern part of the city centre around Angel Place, Trinity Street and St Swithin’s Street.

“The repaving of these areas are the first fruits of this major project, which will also include the revival of several neglected buildings including the former Co-op and – most significantly – the reopening of the Scala Theatre.”

The works are set to last for up to 10 weeks in total. In order to safely deliver the works, it will be necessary to restrict traffic movements on Trinity Street and St Swithin’s Street for up to five weeks.

In addition, Trinity Passage will be closed as a pedestrian through route for up to three weeks.
