A PAIR of thieves have been ordered to pay nearly £300 each for stealing DVDs from a shop in Worcester.

Sam Edward Gledall, of Bransford Road in St John’s, and Steven Careless, from Barbourne, both pleaded guilty at Worcester Magistrates Court on Friday (June 12) to taking DVDs from WHSmiths.

Careless was charged with stealing one DVD worth £9.99 and Gledall admitted to taking two DVDs worth £25.98.

Mark Soper, prosecuting, told the court both men walked into the store on May 8 and 28-year-old Gledall took two DVDs and hid them under his clothing and Careless, aged 35, took one DVD and hid it. They were followed by staff and the items were recovered.

Defence solicitor Chris Aggery, represented Gledall, he said: “The facts speak for themselves and he does not dispute what was said. He puts it down to stupidity and is extremely remorseful.

“He explains that he has previously had a drug addiction but has now won that war.”

Careless, who represented himself, told the court he acted out of stupidity. His aerial had gone and he thought he would watch a DVD. He also said he had a drug problem which he has been receiving help since the incident.

Chair of the bench ,Jane Knowles, ordered both men to pay a £75 fine, £50 in court costs, a £20 victim surcharge and £150 in court charges.
