PARALYMPIAN Martin Tye was the guest of honour to celebrate sporting success at Blessed Edward Oldcorne Catholic College’s sports awards.

The respected athlete won the powerlifting and rowing at last year’s Invictus Games and is currently second in the World Strongest Disabled Man. Martin has also won the British Indoor Rowing Championship title three years in a row.

After he presented the awards to those in years seven, eight, nine and 10, Martin spoke about how sport had changed his life and inspired him to achieve things he didn’t think possible.

“My partner signed me up to the Invictus games behind my back. We had watched the games on TV but I was too scared to do anything about it as I didn’t think I could take part in sport because of my disability,” he said.

“Taking part in the games in Toronto last year pushed me beyond my limits but also made me realise I can do anything I put my mind to.

“Disability doesn’t define who you are, it’s simply a challenge to overcome,” he added.
