PCC studies abuse cases

Worcester Editorial 2nd Mar, 2021   0

THE handling of domestic abuse cases across Worcestershire is to be investigated internally by West Mercia Police.

Police and Crime Commissioner John Campion is seeking reassurance that the force’s domestic abuse response is as good as it can be and he has promised to deliver improvements if they are needed.

Domestic abuse makes up a quarter of all reported crimes across West Mercia.

Despite reports of domestic abuse remaining largely static over the last year, advice sought from organisations such as West Mercia Women’s Aid has increased.

This may be due to victims feeling they are unable to report incidences to the police because they have no other option but to remain inside with their abusive partners.

Mr Campion said: “This is an indication that incidences of domestic abuse have increased during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“I will be seeking reassurance from the force that they are delivering the right service to domestic abuse victims.

“This means calls being handled correctly, officers having the correct training in place to offer the best support and to make sure accurate information is being captured to provide the best intelligence.

“It is my job as commissioner to make sure the voice of our communities is heard and represented at the highest level of policing.

“I want to make make sure the investment I have made in services is producing the right outcomes for the public.”
