Pop-up museum takes creativity on the road

Worcester Editorial 6th Feb, 2021   0

MUSEUM of Royal Worcester chiefs are celebrating after being handed cash to create its first ‘pop-up’ museum.

The project to bring creative activities inspired by their collection outdoors into the local community has been made possible by an award from Postcode Community Trust – a grant-giving charity funded entirely by players of People’s Postcode Lottery.

The Severn Street venue looks after the largest collection of Worcester porcelain in the world, together with the factory and design archive.

The world-class collection tells the stories of the people who made and enjoyed these extraordinary objects, celebrating the colourful history of 250 years of ceramic design, local skill and innovation.

Sophie Heath, museum director, said: “We are thrilled to have been awarded this grant and want to extend our thanks to the players of the People’s Postcode Lottery.

“The Pop-up Museum is an exciting way to introduce the Museum to our local communities in a playful and fun way, offering creative ceramic and craft activities inspired by our collections. The activities on offer will be created by local artists and appeal to the young and old.”

Sir Michael Perry GBE, Chair of Trustees at the Museum, said: “Thanks to the People’s Postcode Lottery and its players we will be able to launch our new Pop-Up Museum in 2021 as Covid-19 restrictions ease, which will help more people get to know this exceptional heritage of national importance that is on their doorstep.”
