Raising the flags in support

Worcester Editorial 25th Jun, 2021   0

MILITARY personnel and councillors joined shoppers on the High Street to observe the raising of the Armed Forces Day Flag over the Guildhall.

Deputy Mayor of Worcester Coun Adrian Gregson was joined by dignitaries for the poignant ceremony, which saw the flag raised on buildings such as the Guildhall among other famous landmarks around the UK ahead of Armed Forces Day on Saturday (June 26).

Following a short speech by Coun Gregson, the exhortation was read by David Waldron before the Last Post and a minute’s silence.

The Kohima Epitah then led into prayers before the Armed Forces Flag was raised.

The event was attended by representatives from the 214 (Worcestershire) Battery, the Mercian Regiment; Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Association and the Hereford and Worcester Army Cadet Force

The 214 Battery even brought a L118 Light Gun and Pinz to display in the courtyard for the event.

“We are raising the flag today in advance of Armed Forces Day on Saturday to show our support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community,” said Coun GregsoN.

“By holding this ceremony we recognise not just those serving in the Armed Forces around the world but also Veterans, Reservists and Cadet Forces and their families – and also the employers who support their commitments.”

The Armed Forces flag is alsp now flying proudly above County Hall, as Worcestershire marks this year’s Armed Forces Week.

Vice chairman Coun Chris Rogers and Coun Rob Adams, chair of Worcestershire’s Armed Forces Covenant Partnership were among the dignitaries in attendance at the ceremony.

“Every year it is our honour to celebrate the outstanding contribution of our Armed Forces,” Coun Adams said.

“It gives us great pride raising the Armed Forces flag as a symbol of our thanks for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community, our serving troops and their families, reservists, veterans, and cadet forces.”
