Ready to throw festive switch

Worcester Editorial 14th Nov, 2018   0

THE COUNTDOWN to Christmas will begin in earnest with Worcester’s festive lights switch on in Cathedral Square on a fun-packed family evening.

The event starts at 3.45pm next Thursday (November 22) with the big switch-on taking place at 6pm.

White and gold coloured lights are being specially hired by the City Council to bring festive sparkle to Worcester’s city centre, as the Christmas shopping season begins in earnest. Fairy lights are also being installed in trees along the High Street, creating an extra magical effect.

“This promises to be a happy and fun-filled occasion for the whole family, and is a great opportunity to bring the whole community together in the spirit of love not hate,” says Coun Jabba Riaz, Mayor of Worcester, who will be switching on the lights.

Hosted by BBC Hereford and Worcester presenters Elliott Webb and Malcolm Boyden, the evening will include entertainment from Luke Swatman, Matt Sheehan, Dharma Burns, Alex Lleo, Woo Town Hillbillies and Worcester Concert Brass, amongst others.

After the lights have been switched on, there will be a community carol sing along. The event signals the start of Christmas late night shopping in Worcester city centre, with many shops staying open until 8pm on Thursdays.

Security measures have been put in place ahead of this year’s Christmas lights switch-on.

Road blocks will be used to prevent access into Cathedral Square and will be used for the upcoming Victorian Fayre from November 29 to December 2.
