Remembering the fallen at the Guildhall

Worcester Editorial 12th May, 2016 Updated: 19th Oct, 2016   0

THE HEROIC actions of Worcestershire sailors who died in the biggest naval battle of the First World War will be remembered during a special centenary event at Worcester’s Guildhall.

Remember the Fallen is joining forces with Worcester Sea Cadets and the Western Front Association to commemorate the Battle of Jutland, which saw British and German naval fleets clash in the North Sea, near Denmark.

The battle – which raged for two days from May 31, 1916 – cost more than 6,000 British sailors their lives, including at least 35 casualties from Worcestershire who are now commemorated on war memorials throughout the county.

Among them was 15-year-old bugler Alfred Eves, from Bromsgrove, whose descendants will be displaying a number of his personal artefacts at the Guildhall.

Visitors to the event on Bank Holiday Monday (May 30) will also be able to explore information on the battle, the ships that clashed in the North Sea and view a copy of the Victoria Cross awarded posthumously to 16-year-old Jack Cornwell for his gallant actions.

The free event, which runs from 11am to 3pm, will include a short midday ceremony to remember the fallen, when the Last Post will be played before a minute’s silence is ended by the playing of the Reveille.

Remember the Fallen is keen to hear from anyone who may have information relating to a casualty of the battle.

Anyone with information is asked to e-mail Sandra Taylor on tommy@rememberthefallen
