Revamp will see lanterns on Worcester's historic Grade II listed bridge go green

WORCESTER’s historic bridge lantern columns are set to change colour under refurbishment plans revealed by the County Council.

As the columns are attached to a Grade II listed bridge, county chiefs have carefully consulted the conservation officer at Worcester City Council and has adhered to their advice on the colour and what should be detailed.

The paint colours will be a heritage Mid-Brunswick Green with gold detailing.

The columns, dating back to the 1930s, have deteriorated following decades of exposure to river flooding conditions, as well as suffering corrosion and general wear and tear.

Having been fully assessed for wear and tear, it is expected that they will be replaced over 12-month period.

The new paint scheme will be very different from that of the lantern columns currently in place and will be noticeably different.

Coun Alan Amos, cabinet member for Highways and Transport, said: “I’m absolutely delighted about the heritage colour selected for the lantern columns of Worcester Bridge.

“My favourite colour, brilliant! They will indeed be stunning and stand out beautifully.

“It will be wonderful to see them fully restored to their original glory. They are unique to the city and hugely contribute to the style and age of the area.”
