Row as Conservative city leader brands Labour's online claims 'a load of old rubbish'

WORCESTER’s self-appointed ‘Voice of St Johns’ has continued his social media war of words on the Conservative leadership despite being condemned by city’s Tory leader.

Coun Richard Udall has echoed comments by Worcester’s former Labour MP Mike Foster and made several accusations about the workings of the Conservative Party in the city earlier this week.

He later withdrew the tweets but not before his accusations over candidate selection and even claims of Tory councillors leaving the party were branded ‘a load of old rubbish’ by Coun Marc Bayliss.

After Coun Udall responded to Coun Bayliss with a suggestion his claims were informed by a Worcester Conservative/s, the Bedwardine leader of Worcester City Council took to Twitter to rebuff the comments.

“If someone told you that, they were clearly winding you up,” Coun Bayliss tweeted.

Undeterred by the claims, Coun Udall has now posted: “I’ve now been told Bedwardine Conservatives are in open civil war. Hearing they have been forced to have a candidate, without any local connections, imposed upon them. Ignoring a local person who has lived and campaigned in the area for many years.”

“As a resident of Bedwardine, I’m worried. If these rumours are true, it shows they are more interested in who is a candidate in a ‘safe seat’ than the people they claim or want to represent.

“People do not like being taken for granted,” he added.

In response, Coun Bayliss told the Observer: “We have an excellent candidate for Bedwadine in Shafaz Ditta who was elected overwhelmingly by members to fight the seat.

“We’re looking forward to the campaign, getting out and about and take no seat or the votes of the people of Worcester for granted.

“Richard has clearly fallen asleep and had a dream!,” he added.

A new candidate will fight the Bedwardine seat on May 5 for the Conservatives as Coun Bill Amos is standing down from the role.

The list of candidates for the 2022 local elections in Worcester will be released on April 6.
