RSPCA rescue badger trapped in concrete pit at Kempsey Sewage Works

Worcester Editorial 10th Jun, 2022   0

A BADGER has been rescued from a concrete pit at Kempsey Sewage Works.

A call was made to the RSPCA for help in saving the stuck stripy snuffler who was lodged six metres down.

Luckily he did not suffer any visible injuries and was hissing and walking fine.

The pit was a storm tank to stop heavy rain overflowing into the sewage pit – fortunately it was empty and it was not raining.

RSPCA animal rescue officer Freya Lamb said: “This poor badger had really got himself into a difficult situation as he wasn’t able to get out of the deep pit.”

Freya entered the tank with a ladder and used specialist equipment to catch the badger before releasing him.

She added: “It’s always great to be able to rescue a wild animal like this and release them there and then so as not to cause them any further distress.

“He was very lucky because he could have easily perished stuck down in the pit without anything to eat or drink.”

Wild animals such as badgers and foxes can bite and scratch when scared, especially if they’re sick or injured.

RSPCA officers are always cautious around them and encourage anyone concerned about an animal’s welfare to contact the charity rather than attempt a rescue themselves.

That’s why the RSPCA always urges caution around them and encourages anyone who is concerned for an animal’s welfare to contact the charity for advice and never attempt to rescue a badger or fox themselves.

Anyone who does spot a wild animal in distress should first check the RSPCA’s website – rspca.org.uk – for information and then – if deemed an emergency – call 0300 1234 999, another welfare charity, a vet or your local police force.
