A DRAMA society has two productions in the running for national awards.

Worcester Operatic and Dramatic Society’s (WODS) Mack and Mabel has been nominated for the National Operatic and Dramatic Association’s (NODA) 2014 Best Musical Award.

Their youth section, WODYS’, production of Footloose has been put forward for the Best Youth Award out of their district.

NODA’s regional representative, Trevor Guest, chose the two society for the recognitions.

Mack and Mabel was shown at the Swan Theatre in October and told the 20 year story of silent movie actor and director Mack Sennett and one of his stars Mabel Normand.

Footloose was shown at the same venue in August and portrayed the iconic 80’s film including its classic anthems.

WOD’s secretary, Bruce Wyatt said: “Congratulations indeed for all involved and very well deserved, maintaining our top class reputation for the best in amateur musicals.”

David Humphries, director and producer of Footloose, said: “WODYS production team get great enjoyment and satisfaction working with the youngsters and also with the parent group. While I feel very honoured that we have been nominated for this award, I would emphasise that this success is as much down to the talented cast and the small army of backstage workers and those who help out at the weekly rehearsals as it is to us.’’

The winners will be announced at the ceremony on Sunday at Sutton Town Hall and the awards will be given out by the national president of NODA, John Barnes.

The societies are now working on their next production, WODS’ West Side Story will be performed at the Swan Theatre from Tuesday (April 21) until Saturday (April 25). WODY’s Annie will be shown there from Tuesday (August 4) until Saturday (August 8).

Tickets for both shows can be bought at Huntingdon Hall box office in CrownGate or on 01905 611427.
