Schools and community groups invited to join elephant parade

Worcester Editorial 13th Oct, 2020   0

SCHOOLS and community groups are being invited to be part of Worcester’s second major public art trail in summer 2021, which will see colourful elephants parade through the city’s streets and open spaces.

Worcester’s Big Parade will bring around 60 beautifully decorated elephant sculptures to the city for eight weeks next summer, including approximately 30 calves which will have been created by local children, teachers and community group members.

The calves will be displayed in city shop windows and at Crowngate Shopping Centre during the trail before being returned to their creators as a lasting memory of the project.

Sara Matthews, Business Development Manager for St Richard’s Hospice, which is bringing the parade to Worcester, said: “We’re beyond excited to host Worcester’s Big Parade next summer, and for the chance to bring the whole community together safely once again.

“Our ‘Mini Parade’ of elephant calves is integral to the event, showcasing the creativity of groups within our community, whilst providing a platform for exploring nature, mindfulness and mental health, and the importance of physical activity. It’s also a great way to engage different age groups with a common goal: to look after each other, and take time to enjoy our beautiful surroundings.

“One of other our key aims is to create lasting memories for local people, reflecting our work at St Richard’s.  We know that the pride of designing an elephant, sharing it with friends and family during the trail, before returning it to your school or community group, will live on in memories for years to come.”

Any school or community group in the county can apply to receive an elephant calf before transforming it from plain white to a work of art. Places are limited and available on a first come, first served basis; with various funding options open to those applying.

Charlie Langhorne, Managing Director of Wild in Art, added: “This is a wonderful opportunity for local schools and groups to be a part of something really special next year.  It will be an event that will see Worcester transformed into a fun, free art space once again and with thousands of people enjoying the creative talents of your pupils or group members.”

More information about the schools and education programme for Worcester’s Big Parade, and details of how to apply, can be found on the event website at: https://worcestersbigparade.co.uk/education-programme/

Applications must be submitted by December 4. Worcester’s Big Parade will run from July 12 to September 5 next year.
