‘SHOOTING stars’ may be visible tonight and tomorrow night when the annual Perseids Meteor Shower is at its peak.
Billed in an article on the National Space Centre website as ‘the best light show of the year’, the Perseids take place between July 16 and August every year.
On August 11 and 12 they are expected to be at their most visible and the dramatic display should be visible across Worcestershire and Birmingham, providing the skies are clear.
In dark areas around ten to 90 meteors-an-hour could be visible.
The Perseids are named after the Perseus summer constellation as they are believed to arrive from that direction.
You will not need any special equipment or specialist skills to see the shower, although a clear sky and plenty of patience will be required.
Darker areas with less pollution provide the best places to see the shower and the best time for viewing is after midnight.
Your eyes could need 15 to 20 minutes to get used to the dark and viewers should make sure they are dressed in warm and comfortable clothing as you may need to be outside for some time to see the spectacle.
