A KIND-HEARTED group of volunteers have raised almost £1,500 for a city charity.

Worcester and District Soroptimists collected £1,433 for Deaf Direct, which supports people suffering with hearing loss.

The organisation offers communication support and training services, volunteering programmes and outreach services.

Lynda Owen selected the Lowesmoor charity as Worcester and District Soroptimists’ ‘Charity of the Year’ during her time as president, with the money being raised through a series of events including a fashion show and an auction night.

Ms Owen said: “Soroptimist International is a global volunteer movement with more than 80,000 members in 132 countries.

“We work at local, national and international levels to educate, empower and enable women and girls in a safe environment.

“Each year, we choose both a local and a national charity to help by fund-raising and volunteering.

“We decided to work with Deaf Direct because of their sterling work in the community helping deaf and hard of hearing people enjoy a better quality of life.”

Philip Gerrard, chief executive of Deaf Direct said: “We’re so grateful for this donation.

“Our charity works hard to improve the lives of those living with hearing loss, but we can’t do it alone.

“Those who are deaf and hard of hearing still experience barriers and prejudice.

“This cheque will help us to support those who need us.”
