FORMER Chancellor Rishi Sunak or Foreign Secretary Liz Truss will be the next Prime Minister after they made it through to the final stage of voting

Both will now face a summer-long pitch to Conservative Party members after emerging on top nearly a week of voting among Conservative MPs at Westminster.

Mr Sunak polled 137 of the parties 358 MPs, Ms Truss earned 113 votes while early favourite Penny Mordaunt was eliminated with 105 votes.

Ms Mordaunt had won support from Malvern’s MP Harriett Baldwin while Worcester’s MP Robin Walker lent his support to Mr Sunak.

The final two will attend hustings organised by the party during the summer with an estimated 160,000 party members entitled to vote.

One of the two will be announced as the new leader of the Conservative Party on Monday, September 5 before being asked to form a Government by Her Majesty the Queen.
