Three detained as 'shot fired' in Blackpole

Worcester Editorial 10th Mar, 2020 Updated: 10th Mar, 2020   0

ARMED police evacuated two busy city businesses after a shot was fired at officers who attempted pull over a vehicle which failed to stop.

Three men were arrested following the incident at about midday yesterday (Tuesday)in Cosgrove Close, near to the Blackpole Road when officers attempted to pull over a vehicle.

The dramatic incident saw the vehicle collide with a number of others on the busy road and metal railings before a search by armed officers of the surrounding area including Lidl and McDonalds.

Officers remained on the scene after the arrests and both Cosgrove Road and Blackpole Road were closed as the Observer went to press.

One eye witness who didn’t wish to be named said: “It was absolutely terrifying, you heard a bang and before you knew it there was police everywhere. They came into McDonalds and started searching in the toilets.

“I’ve never seen anything like it, it was the sort of thing you expect in a movie or a drama, not always on the streets of Worcester, well round here at least.

Chief Insp Gareth Morgan said: “Thankfully no one has been injured but this is obviously a very shocking incident for the local community and the officers involved. Firstly I’d like to reassure the public that there is not believed to be any threat to the public.

“Armed officers quickly responded to support the officers at the scene and the local Lidl store was evacuated whilst thorough searches were carried out there and in McDonalds, both as a precaution. It has now been fully opened and we’d like to thank shoppers and staff in the shop for their cooperation.

“Crimes involving firearms are rare in Worcestershire and this is thought to be an isolated incident. A thorough investigation has been launched and three men are currently in police custody.”

The police helicopter was used as part of the investigation.
